Presbyopia in Lawrence KS

Presbyopia in Lawrence KS is the vision condition which is caused by the normal loss of flexibility of the crystalline lens inside the eye as we age. This results in the gradual loss of the ability to focus on near objects and print. The lens is attached to muscles which can change its shape and, when we are young, it is very pliable and flexible. When the lens flattens out, focus is shifted farther away. For near focus the lens bulges out more, giving the eye extra focusing power. As we age the lens gradually becomes more rigid, making it harder to make it adjust for near focus. People typically start to notice symptoms in their early 40’s: trouble with small print at near, feeling of eye strain during close focusing, and holding print farther away to be able to see it clearly.
What this means for you in Lawrence KS
As presbyopia worsens with age, our eyes need extra help to focus up close. This can be in the form of reading glasses, bifocal or progressive lenses which provide correction for both near and far vision, or multifocal contact lenses.
During your eye examination we will inquire about any problem you may be having with close focusing. If needed, we will perform subjective vision tests to evaluate your need for help with near vision. If you do need help we will discuss with you the various options available before giving you a prescrption for glasses or starting a contact lens fitting evaluation.
